Sfiya
In her practice, Sfiya addresses issues linked to the migration process, identity hybridity, uprootedness, heritage and memory. Distinguished by her rich palette of blues and oranges, the artist incorporates symbols from Maghrebian and Mediterranean cultures into her paintings, while depicting superstitious beliefs and rituals handed down from generation to generation. Through her creations, she questions the way in which these ancestral traditions are transformed and evolve in a migratory context. Exploring the boundary between dream and reality, Sfiya's works, tinged with surrealism and melancholy, transport us to an elsewhere, an in-between where past and present, Maghreb and North America, converge.
Born in Canada, Sfiya grew up in Morocco, then immigrated to France, where she completed a master's degree in architecture before settling in Montreal in 2017. Her work has been presented at various art events and exhibitions in Montreal and Quebec City, including the Festival Art Souterrain (2022).
