Bump in the Carpet - Ingrid Tremblay

Cette œuvre en marbre a été fabriquée au Carving Studio and Sculpture Center, une résidence d’artiste située dans une carrière au Vermont. Je réfléchissais à la façon dont la lumière interagit avec la surface blanche du marbre. Je souhaitais sculpter un relief qui permettrait de créer des variations de tonalités, allant de plus claires à plus foncées. J’ai pensé que si je sculptais un motif sur une surface irrégulière, ce phénomène serait accentué. J’ai donc choisi de sculpter une forme rappelant un tapis ou un coussin. Il y avait une petite bosse dans le tapis à côté de la machine à café à la résidence. J’observais les gens tous les jours qui se servaient du café. Les premiers jours, plusieurs trébuchaient sur la bosse. Les jours suivants, tous la contournaient. Personne n’a tiré sur le tapis pour faire disparaître cette bosse. Cela m’a fait penser à la résilience, notre capacité à nous adapter et à accepter l’état des choses, sans pouvoir les changer.

This marble work was made at the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center, an artist’s residence located in a quarry in Vermont. I was thinking about how light interacts with the white surface of the marble. I wanted to sculpt a relief that would allow me to create variations in tone, from lighter to darker. I thought that if I sculpted a pattern on an irregular surface, this phenomenon would be accentuated. So, I chose to carve a shape reminiscent of a carpet or a cushion. There was a small dent in the carpet next to the coffee machine at the residence. I watched the people using the coffee every day. On the first few days, many people stumbled over the dent. On the following days, everyone went around it. No one pulled on the carpet to get rid of the dent. It made me think about resilience, our ability to adapt and accept the way things are, without being able to change them.
